Achieving Harmony
Sam's Way
2008 (top medal)
Sam knew it all along. However, when I received the theme for a medal competition " Achieving Harmony" my mind went blank. Later - reflecting on it more deeply asking myself; when did I feel at harmony with the world? It of course was when Sam and I ran together through natural settings. Sam knew it all along and I felt it too. Man, wolves, and later domesticated dogs have been working together for their mutual survival for more than three thousand years. It felt timeless - the kilometers passed by effortlessly. Off the leash we stayed side by side throughout the run.Sam passed away in 2009. He was "born a dog, but died a gentleman". During our walks and runs he would find and carry plastic soda bottles which we would recycle or toss away properly. If near water he would drop the bottle at my feet signaling for me to toss the bottle in the water for him to retrieve. This we would do for a dozen or more times before it was time for us to head home, my call - not his idea. During his life he found and removed over three thousand bottles in the woods and paths in our part of the world. I have created several sculpts of Sam during his life. Other than his portraits, there is always a bottle in the background. Now when I run or walk I always pick up a bottle or bottles. I think of it as "Sam's Way".Sam and Me - in Perfect Harmony 2009 ( bottom Medal )
It is a clear and warm Summer's morning. We are running together, on a path, through our local woods. Sam has not yet spotted the plastic soda bottle that he will carry with him for the rest of our run. Can you spot the bottle? there is one in each medallion.
